"He's just got a spirit, you know? That's what I love about him...he's very alive and very lively. You don't get to see a lot of that--only in the beginning of the first film--but his spirit, the light that's in him, is what holds him together."

At the early age of 7, Wood began modeling in his hometown and took piano lessons. He appeared in The Sound of Music and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at elementary school. He also served as a choir boy during the production of See How They Run, produced by the Marion Creative Council.
Wood landed a succession of larger roles that made him a critically acclaimed child actor by age 9, being nominated for several Young Artist Awards.

When Wood finished upon the set of The Lord of the Rings, Jackson gave him two gifts: one of the One Ring props used on the set and Sting, Frodo’s sword. He was also given a pair of prosthetic “hobbit feet” which were worn during filming. He also contributed his talents to fellow The Lord of the Rings star, Viggo Mortensen’s album Pandemoniumfromamerica, singing and playing various instruments.
Wood has a tattoo of the word ‘nine’ written in Tengwar script, below his waist on the right side, as a reference to his character as one of the Fellowship of the Ring.
He was overjoyed to come back to Middle-earth once more in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It was an opportunity to revisit a time in his life that had passed and have another peek into the world he left behind. He said it felt like stepping back in time. He noticed the new silicone Hobbit foot, now knee length instead of just a shoe. Wood would’ve been thrilled if he had those, it would’ve meant no early mornings.
