"Rumors have begun to spread, The dragon Smaug has not been seen in many years... Perhaps the vast wealth of our people lies unprotected... perhaps it is time to take back Erebor!"

Thorin has a powerful forbidding presence, which is completely understandable when you look at him. His broad shoulders, black hair and cloak, fierce regard and deep mind might make up for that.
Fili and Kili know him as Uncle Thorin, as Thorins sister is their mother, and this makes them a huge responsibility.
Smaug terrorized Erebor when Thorin was only young, forcing him and his family out of their Kingdom and to forfeit all of their treasure. After wondering around Middle-Earth for a while, he made home in the Blue Mountains, north-west of the Shire. He trained up as a blacksmith and always thought about taking back his Kingdom from the dragon.

It was the Dwarven Wars, when Thorin fought in great honor and skill, that Azog the Defiler shattered his shield. And grabbing nothing but an oaken branch, he skillfully used it to defend himself and managed to cut Azogs hand off. He still fights with the oak branch strapped to his arm. This was right after Azog clean swiped his Grandfathers head right off in front of him.
Brave and fearless are just a couple of the personality traits that Thorin has. And it’s easy to see that, just remember what Balin says “There is one I could call King”. Most would say he is a strong fighter, wielding a pair of great battle axes, and after travelling through the Trollshaws he find a sword forged by the Elves of Gondollin, Orcrist, otherwise known as Biter by the Goblins.
It’s not until Gandalf meets Thorin at Bree ‘from a chance meeting’ that Thorin gets the confidence to rally a troop and to do what he’s been dreaming of for a while, take back the Kingdom of Erebor. This task wasn’t an easy one and thankfully Gandalf had Thorins grandfathers map and key.

As the autocratic leader of the company of Dwarves (and Hobbit) he sets off for Erebor, in hopes that he will find the Arkenstone (Also known as ‘The Heart of the Mountain’) and that is why he has hired Bilbo as his ‘Burglar’. At first Thorin thinks nothing of Bilbo and doesn’t think he is up to the task, but time slowly shows him that Bilbo is rather sneaky and can do the job quite well.
While sneaking around in Erebor, Bilbo finds the Arkenstone. But due to the anger and vengeance of Thorin he decides to keep it and used it as barter during the Battle of the Five Armies. During the battle, Thorin charged the ranks of the Orc-leader Bolg, son of Azog, but he was struck down with many wounds. He sadly died. He was buried deep under the Lonely Mountain with the Arkenstone upon his chest, and Orcrist was returned and laid upon his tomb. Before he died, he made peace with Bilbo.
