“He’s very vain and he’s a bit dodgy: an outsider, a wide-boy, a schemer, a wheeler-dealer and a kleptomaniac – well, let’s not mince words, a thief! Ostracized by his family, he’s been living rough, on his own, in the wild (which is amazing considering his great hair-do!); he won’t take a backward step from anyone and no matter how big the creature that comes up against him, he’ll have a crack at fighting it. Lovely guy though, but probably not someone who you’d want marrying your daughter!”
QUICK BIO
BIOGRAPHY
Jed Brophy fell into acting while training as a physical education teacher.
He started acting in the late 80s. Starring in theatre roles such as Trainspotting, where he portrayed Begbie; Steve Martin’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile, where he portrayed Picasso
He got his screen debut in a National Film Unit drama, entitled Small War on the Edge of Town (1988). Brophy followed it with an ‘enjoyable’ lead role in Gaylene Preston relationship drama Married, an hour-long piece for television, then played screen brother to Brit star Robert Powell in World War I Gallipoli tale Chunuk Bair.
Brophy is no stranger to The Hobbit, in fact he remembers reading the book when he was only 7, and that was when he wondered how grand it would be to be in something of this scale.

Brophy has been in dozens of film and tv projects, including Second Hand Wedding (2008), Warrior’s Way (2010) and District 9 (2009). And he has been in award winning theatre productions.
While co-producing Skin Tight, Brophy dislocated his arm and was knocked out, but he just carried on. The theatre production won a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival.
Brophy has had various cameo roles, including being a member of the court watchers in Until Proven Innocent.
Jed Brophy was invited originally to help with the ‘pre-visualization’. Where the script is filmed as a storyboard with actors’ voices, so that Peter can advance-plan how the film will be shot. After this, he was invited to play Nori.
When his agent called him with the news, he went from whooping great whoops of delight to weeping tears of joy.

This, by far, isn’t the first time that Brophy has worked with Sir Peter Jackson. But not only that, but his son Sadwyn Brophy, starred in The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003) as Aragorn and Arwen’s son (Eldarion) in Arwen’s vision.
Brophy has starred in Braindead (1992), Heavenly Creatures (1994), King Kong (2005) and in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003).
He never thought that he was the right physical type to play a Dwarf.
Brophy endured hours of full body prosthetics and make-up for his roles in The Lord of the Rings, so that made it easier to work on The Hobbit.
The Hobbit, he can safely say, is the most thrilling moment of his career. And he’s still excited about it all.
Aside from his own acting, Brophy has done stints teaching acting students at Toi Whakaari and Whitireia's College of Performing Arts.
