"What many of you may not know is that when I was a young teen, The Hobbit was my favorite book… and the Wood Elves were my favorite characters in all of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth. I fancied being a Wood Elf myself, but never dreamed in a million years I’d actually get to become one!"
QUICK BIO
BIOGRAPHY
Evangeline Lilly was raised in British Columbia by her parents, and The Hobbit was her favorite book to read as a child. Lilly was brought up Christian, and at the sweet age of 18 she took part in a three week mission to the Philippines.
She graduated from W. J. Mouat Secondary School in Abbotsford, where she played soccer and was the vice-president of the student council. While in college, she worked as a waitress, mechanic and a flight attendant for Royal Airlines, which paid for her tuition fees. Lilly attended the University of British Columbia where she majored in International Relations, due to her interest in humanitarian causes and global development. While at the University, she founded and ran a world development and human rights committee at her university. She has lived under a grass hut in the jungles of the Philippines with a missionary group, and has been a volunteer for children's projects since the age of 14. Her studies were cut short due to her offer to play Kate Austen on Lost (2004).

Evangeline Lilly was discovered by Jeff Palffy, formerly with Ford Models, now with PMG Management in Vancouver. Palffy noticed Lilly walking the streets of Kelowna, British Columbia, and offered her his business card, which she took. However, Lilly didn’t consider acting straight away. When she eventually called Palffy, she landed herself in several roles in commercials and non-speaking parts in the TV shows; Smallville (2001-2003) and Kingdom Hospital (2004).
Also, prior to Lost, she worked as an extra on film sets to help pay her University tuition. She can be seen in episodes of Tru Calling (2003) and Dead Like Me(2003), and in several films including White Chicks (2004), Stealing Sinatra (2003) and Freddy vs. Jason (2003).
Palffy was a huge instrument in the process of Lilly being offered the role of Kate Austen in Lost. And it was a friend of Lilly’s that encourage her to audition for the role, however Lilly didn’t think she’d get the role. Lost reminded Lilly of The Blue Lagoon, and roughly 75 women auditioned for the same role.

Lost ran for six seasons between 2004 and 2010. Lilly refused to do a nudity scene in the show. Her character Kate can be quite often seen climbing trees; this is because the very athletic Lilly loves to climb trees herself.
After shooting the final episode of Lost, Lilly said she was considering taking a break from acting to focus on her charity and humanitarian efforts. She told Vulture, "I consider acting a day job — it's not my dream; it's not my be-all, end-all." She has claimed to use her actress earnings to further her humanitarian efforts, not the other way around.
During and after Lost, Lilly went on to some blockbuster movies including The Hurt Locker (2008), Afterwards (2009) which was a psychological thriller and she also portrayed Bailey Tallent in Real Steel (2011)

Lilly underwent intensive training including sword fighting and archery, as well as learning the Elvish language. It was 3 months after her son, Kahekili was born, that she started filming.
Evangeline Lilly wrote the book, The Squickerwonkers, which was illustrated by Weta designer, Johnny Fraser-Allens.
Lilly is fluent in the French language. Lilly works with nonprofits such as the GO Campaign, and she has been the spokeswoman of L’Oreal Paris since 2009.
