Before the Sun and the Moon, the ancient race of the Dwarves came into being. Which makes them one of the most ancient and long-lived races of the Free Peoples of Middle-Earth. Dwarves are shorter and stouter than Elves or Men, but taller than Hobbits. And now the inhabit the hidden places of the world, and live in huge underground cave-systems and tunnel complexes.
Dwarves often follow and act on their gut instincts. They have a good, light sense of humor, that always comes shining through.
It is easy to decipher a Dwarf from a Hobbit. Not only from their height, but also their beards, which are worn long and they like to plait and braid it in the most elaborate and outlandish fashion. Believe it or not, but the women also grow beards, which makes it hard for outsiders to tell male from female. They often say “The bigger the beard, the more impressive the Dwarf”

Dwarves walk as if the weight of the world is on their shoulders, so wherever they go they often leave a massive footprint. The Dwarves’ movements follow a time signature of a four-count: ‘Bom-Bom-Bom-Bom-Bom-Bom-Bom-Bom” and when they stop, there is a sense of completion. Because of their size they can cruise through the terrain like miniature tanks.
The Dwarves speak a secret language known as Khuzdul, which is written in Cirith (an angular runic alphabet developed by the Elves)
Their strength makes up for their height which make them fearsome and capable warriors. And they are also skilled miners. Dwarves will delve deep into the roots of mountains beneath the caverns in which they make their home in search of gold and silver, precious stones and legendary mithril (A silver metal beyond price). They mine deep into the roots of the mountains to extract precious metals and jewels. They forge the finest of axes, swords and jewelery, and have crafted monumental architectures far beneath the earth. In fact, it is their smiths; metalworkers and stonemasons that are famed through Middle-Earth.

Of old, the Dwarves forged relationships with Men and Elves, and their goat-drawn carts were to be seen on all the major trading routes of Middle-Earth, carrying tools, weapons, armor, and metals out of their mountain kingdoms returning with all those supplies they could not be grown underground.
Following the war between Sauron and the Elves in the Second Age, the Dwarves of Moria retreated from the conflict into their mountain kingdom and closed their doors on the world, so where before there was trade and friendship between the Elves and the Dwarves, there has since been mistrust and even hostility between the two races. The Dwarves have fallen upon troubled times, having been disposed of their ancestral kingdoms in Khazad-dûm and Erebor, driven out of the first by a monstrous Balrog and the second by the greatest dragon of his day, Smaug the Terrible, where Thranduil, King of the Woodland Realm, turned his back against the Dwarves. Now, homeless and embittered against those who did not help them in their hour of need, they wander Middle-Earth with a grudge in their hearts, and the determined desire to regain their lost homeland
