Dáin II Ironfoot, otherwise known as Dáin Ironfoot, is the grandson of Grór and second cousin to Thorin. It’s his red ax that makes his most notable feature.
Dáin was settled in the Iron Hills, in the north regions of Middle-earth.
Dáin fought in the Battle of Azanulbizar, where his father was killed by Azog. Dáin was only a stripling, barely old enough for battle, but he caught the chief as he was nearly on the threshold of Moria, and hewed off the goblin’s head with his red ax.
After burning the great number of dead and leaving no armor or weapons behind for Orc scavengers, Dáin, who saw that a Balrog of Morgoth lurked within, led his folk back to the Iron Hills, leaving Thráin and Thorin Oakenshield behind with the head of Azog. Afterwards, he became the lord of the Dwarves in the Iron Hills and declined to enter Moria ever again.

Dáin refused to risk him or his army on Thorin’s Quest for the Lonely Mountain.
Once Smaug had been defeated by Bard, Thorin claimed the entire hoard and proclaimed himself King under the Mountain, but both Bard and the Elven king Thranduil both longed for compensation of their suffering caused by the Dragon. Because his company of thirteen could not hold the mountain, Thorin sent for Dáin. Dáin responded to Thorin's call and set out with more than five hundred dwarves, well-armed and experienced. They were originally intent on driving off the Elves and Men, but Gandalf arrived to inform them of the approaching Orcs and Wargs. They all united against the common enemy, and so was fought the Battle of Five Armies in the valley of Dale. It is highly likely that most of the Dwarves who fought, also fought at the Battle of Azanulbizar, so therefore would have been experienced survivors and killer.

Thorin was killed in the battle, as were his sister-sons Kíli and Fíli. This made Dáin the next in line to become King under the Mountain, and King of all of Durin's folk. This gave Dwarves a mighty presence and fortress as Gandalf wanted.
In 3019 an army of Easterlings attacked the Lonely Mountain and Dale. Dáin died at a great age during that attack, part of the War of the Ring, still fighting as a mighty ax-wielder despite his great age. He perished standing over the body of his friend King Brand (grandson of Bard) before the Gate of Erebor. He was one of a very few who battled in both the Battle of Five Armies and took part in The War of The Ring. It seems unlikely that the 252-year-old Dwarf was aware, but only weeks before his own death, the path for Dwarves to return to Khazad-dum was cleared when Gandalf the Grey battled and slew Durin’s Bane, the same Balrog of Morgoth.
