"YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THIS. YOU HAVE A CHOICE. YOU'VE DONE HONORABLY BY OUR PEOPLE. YOU HAVE BUILT A NEW LIFE FOR US IN THE BLUE MOUNTAINS, A LIFE OF PEACE, AND PLENTY. A LIFE THAT IS WORTH MORE THAN ALL THE GOLD IN EREBOR."

Brother to Dwalin, and part of Durin’s Royal Line. Balin is the second-eldest member in the Company, and one of Thorin’s closes friends and fiercest supporters. And Balin has acted like a father towards Thorin, and he turns to Balin first for advice and support in times of doubt.
Balin can be easily recognized by his long white beard and moustache.
Balin is both wise and calm, the most vulnerable, has sharp eyes, and is gentle and wise.
Balin always has a gentle word of wisdom for his friends, and he is a skilled and powerful fighter. He wields a bronze sword with a unique cross-shaped tip (aka flat-bladed mace)
Balin was at the front gate of the Lonely Mountain with King Thráin and the young prince Thorin, when Smaug descended in flame and fire, and he saw the town of Dale being destroyed. He accompanied Thráin on the doomed expedition to regain the kingdom of Khazad-dum, and fought in the Battle of Azandlbizar with Dwalin and Thorin.

In 2989 T.A., Balin ruled Moria after the Quest for the Lonely Mountain.
Seven years later, after the Quest to the Lonely Mountain, it was Balin who accompanied Gandalf to visit Bilbo in Bag End.
He died in Khazad-dûm. His tomb was built in the Chambers of Mazarbul (the Chamber of Records) where he established his seat. The tomb was discovered by the nine members of the Fellowship of the Ring as they were attempting to make passage from the west side of the Misty Mountains to the east in January of 3019. After openly grieving for Balin, Gimli takes up his axe.
